Anne Swaney, daughter of Georgeanne and Jack Swaney of Platte City, was crowned 1994 Platte County Fair Queen Friday night by Brande Davis, who reigned as the 1993 queen. The queen and her court included Cherie Nuckols, second runner-up and daughter of David and Judy Nuckols of Kansas City; Anne Swaney; Rone Novotny, first runner-up and daughter of Ron and Jean Novotny of Platte City; and Jill Jackson, voted Miss Congeniality by the other contestants and daughter of Sue and Boyd Heiser of Platte City. Swaney will receive a $350 scholarship with $200 provided by Platte County Fair Board, $100 by Platte Valley Bank and $50 by Wells Bank.


Patrick McKernan, a former teacher in the Platte County School District who has served as principal at Elwood (Ks.) High School the past two years, has been chosen Principal of the Year honoree for the 1994-95 school year by the Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals (KASAP) for Area 1. McKernan is a 1982 graduate of Wathena (Ks.) High School and a graduate of Kansas State University.
