Voters within the boundaries of the Northland Regional Ambulance District (NRAD) will decide on a proposed levy increase of 30 cents per $100 of assessed valuation.
The question will go before voters on Tuesday, April 2. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
If approved, the tax levy of the ambulance district would rise from .3792 to .6792 per $100 of assessed valuation, a net increase of 81% in the tax rate.
Northland Regional Ambulance District is a political subdivision, established in 1994 by the registered voters within the district’s boundaries. The district is governed by an elected board of directors, who serve in the six sub-districts within NRAD’s boundaries.
An executive director, hired by the board, oversees the day-to-day operations of the district.
The district covers more than 340 square miles in Platte and Clay counties, north of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The district includes the Camden Point, Dearborn, Smithville and Central Platte fire protection districts, as well as a portion of the Edgerton-Trimble Fire Protection District.
The exact wording of the ballot question is:
“Shall the Northland Regional Ambulance District be authorized to increase the existing tax levy ceiling by 30 cents per $100 of assessed valuation for the purpose of attracting and retaining qualified staff and meeting additional operating expenses?
The ballot question points out that the levy increase would begin for the 2024 tax year and can be applied for each year thereafter.
