The United States Geological Survey says Platte County was at the center of an earthquake on Friday afternoon, March 15, around 1:46 p.m.
The earthquake, classified as mild, was reported near Ferrelview. The USGS reported that the epicenter was near a cell phone tower about half a mile north-northeast of Ferrelview. Officials say the earthquake occurred about six miles below the ground.
It was reported as a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter scale. Officials with the USGS report earthquakes of 3.5 to 5.4 are “often felt but rarely cause damage.”
There are no known reports of damage in Platte County from Friday’s event.
Multiple folks inside the Ambassador Building, located just east of I-29 near the airport exit, reported feeling the effects of the quake.
“There was a slight jiggle of the building for a few seconds,” says Joe Vanover, an attorney and county commissioner whose law office is inside the Ambassador Building. Vanover was on the fourth floor of the building at the time.
Brian Whitley, an alderman for Parkville, posted on The Landmark’s Facebook page that he felt it on the third floor of the Ambassador Building.
Gary Pixler, a resident in the 13000 block of Prairie Creek Road at Platte City, said he felt it inside his home.
“I felt it here at the house. It shook our bed as I was laying on it reading. Knew it was a quake as I remember them well from living in California. I contacted USGS and filled out the report. Shortly after they verified it as a 3.5 in the Ferrelview area,” Pixler said.
Multiple other folks reported feeling it in Platte City. Some others who posted on The Landmark’s Facebook page reported feeling it in Dearborn, in Riverside, and along Interurban Road in rural Platte County.
“I live in Platte City, six miles from the airport. My poodle was going crazy,” posted Mindy Brenno on The Landmark’s Facebook page.
