The Barry School and Northland Career Center were recently listed in an investigation into health inspections at Kansas City area school cafeterias. The two Platte County R-3 schools were cited with critical violations during recent inspections at the two schools. At Barry, violations included an employee drinking from a cup at the food preparation table, only one employee had a food handler’s license, there was no sanitizer in a bucket for cleaning utensils, grease was built up on a can opener mounted to a table, and pasta salad at the salad bar was near exceeding 41 degrees. Violations at Northland Career Center included cracked spatulas being used, potentially hazardous foods not labeled with a discard date, a microwave was dirty, a slicer was dirty and mold was found in an ice machine.
A downtown Platte City business had more than $3,000 worth of merchandise stolen over the weekend. The missing merchandise? Live lizards, snakes, and scorpions as well as accessory items such as cages. The Pets N More store at the intersection of Second and Main Street had a burglary sometime between 10:30 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday, according to Platte City Police Det. Al Devalkenaere. According to police, there were no signs of forced entry to the business and the store owners suspect a prior employee of the theft. The prior employee may have still had a key to the store.
