OVER HEIGHT LOAD STRIKES HWY. 92 BRIDGE OVER I-29

It will cause some traffic hardships in Platte City for a long period of time, officials say.

The Missouri Department of Transportation announced late Monday afternoon, Jan. 22 that it has closed Hwy. 92 in both directions at I-29 after the bridge over I-29 was struck earlier that afternoon.

This closure will be in place indefinitely. The ramps at I-29 and Hwy. 92 Interchange will remain open to right turns only. The suggested detour is to utilize I-29 to adjacent interchanges at Mexico City Ave, and at Main St/Route HH.

MoDOT officials told The Landmark that the bridge was struck by an over height load on Monday afternoon. Witnesses told The Landmark that an excavator being hauled on the back of a truck was too tall and struck bridge.

“This closure will be in place indefinitely until further evaluation can take place,” said Katie Manzke, communications specialist for MoDOT on Tuesday morning.

Marji Gehr, city administrator for Platte City, said MoDOT officials told the city they’ll have a different level of engineers come in to inspect the bridge and hope to have specifics on repair plans in the next week or two.

Gehr said the impact “sheered through concrete and rebar” in three sections of the bridge.

“It will be a massive, massive repair and a lengthy inconvenience,” Gehr said Tuesday night during a Platte City Board of Aldermen meeting.
