It was determined that the handicapped parking spaces that allowed easy access to the interior of the English Landing Park for disabled citizens should be removed. A few years ago they were removed. For those citizens, it has made access to the park more difficult.
Initially, the request to re-establish the handicapped parking spaces inside the English Landing Park was voted down by the Community Land and Recreation Board by a vote of 7 to 0.
However, a second vote from the Parkville aldermen (which is a better representation of the local citizens) to allow those with disabilities to have handicapped parking spaces re-established was narrowly defeated by a vote of 4 to 3.
In the Sept.10 edition of The Landmark, Mayor Dean Katerndahl announced plans for the park, which include improving access by building additional benches, amenities, and a bridge that would shorten the walk to the interior of the park and accessible playground area.
Many of the citizens of Platte County are struggling with inflation, higher property taxes, the cost of groceries, and worries about the future. I understand the need for people with disabilities to have closer access to the park. However, I question if the timing is right to begin a new project of this scale.
Maybe we should consider an easier and more economical way to provide this service. We could make that happen by repainting the parking space lines and putting the handicap signs in the ground where the parking existed prior to those spaces being removed.
