MONEY AND EMPLOYEES’ PERSONAL ITEMS TAKEN
The Subway sandwich shop in Platte City was robbed by a man with a gun last week, Platte City police say.
According to Platte City Police Chief Joe Wellington, a man walked into the Subway location, produced a gun and demanded all the money from the cash register. Police described the suspect as a light-skinned black male.
Wellington said the suspect also took some personal items from multiple employees of the restaurant and fled the scene.
Police said the robbery occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4. Subway is located in a business strip at 1820 NW Prairie View Rd., Unit A, in Platte City.
The police chief declined to reveal whether there were customers in the Subway at the time of the robbery.
“It was pretty quick and (the suspect) got right back out, which is a good thing. Nobody got hurt. Money can be replaced, people can’t,” Wellington said.
The next day, there was an attempted robbery at the Bank of Weston, which is located along Hwy. 92 a short distance east across I-29 from the area where the Subway is located. Authorities are investigating whether the two incidents are related.
The attempted robbery at the Bank of Weston location (see separate story) in Platte City occurred about 10:42 a.m., roughly 16 hours after the Subway robbery.
“Originally we kind of thought (the incidents could be related) but some things are making us think that they are not,” Wellington said, declining to go into specifics. “The farther we get into it the less likely it looks like they’re related, but we can’t say for sure.”
