The 2023 Holiday Lighting Celebration in Downtown Platte City will be held Wednesday, Nov. 22. For many years, the holiday lighting has occurred on the evening before Thanksgiving.

The celebration centered on Main Street will actually begin at 5:30 p.m. and run until 8 p.m.

It is sponsored by the Platte City Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Platte City. The event is typically the largest community event held in Downtown Platte City each year.

This year’s theme is “A German Christmas.”

The flipping of the switch for lights on the courthouse and surrounding downtown buildings at 6 p.m. will be held as part of a ceremony on the steps of the Platte County Courthouse. Flipping the switch will be Emmalyn Burnett and Katherine Morgan, two of the Aspiring Entrepreneur Award winners from Platte County High School.

It is followed immediately by the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The evening will also include activities such as:

•Santa and Mrs. Claus at the North Pole (former City Hall)
•Horse Drawn Carriage Rides
•Christmas Photo Booth
•Letters to Santa
•Pony Rides
•Petting Zoo
•Christmas Karaoke
•Christmas Selfie Station
•Clown with balloon animals
•Make-it-Take-it ornaments
•Reindeer Antlers
•12 foot Santa inflatable giveaway

OTHER TREATS

Other free offerings at the fire department will include frosted sugar cookies, popcorn, s’mores, assorted Christmas cookies, candy canes, chocolate covered pretzels, gingerbread cookies, hot apple cider, hot cocoa, and holiday treat bags.

MUSIC

According to Tricia Friddell, executive director of the Platte City Chamber of Commerce, musical offerings will include:
