The 10th Circle of Pickem

In the annals of Dante’s Inferno, we are introduced to nine distinct circles of hell: Limbo, Wrath, and so on. Personally, I propose we extend that list to an even ten.

The newest addition? “Game Spoilers”. This tenth circle should be reserved for those nefarious beings who can’t resist the urge to immediately text the results of a sports game. It doesn’t matter if the recipient was watching on a delay, tending to charitable work, or perhaps just waiting for a peaceful evening to catch up on the game. And then there are those who intensify their crime by asserting, “Well, you should’ve turned your phone off if you didn’t want me to text you.” Let’s grant this subgroup a special section in our newly formed circle and dub them “Narcissistic Spoilers”.

The fitting torment for these folks? Being forced to watch cinematic masterpieces, only to have the twist endings prematurely revealed by a lurking, malevolent clown. Think of the suspense in Momento, Fight Club, The Empire Strikes Back, or any M. Night Shyamalan thriller – all spoiled in the blink of an eye.

Just a thought…  Anyways back to Pickem.

The drama unfolds once more as we wrap up Week 3 of the NFL Pick’em contest. The competition was fierce, and the top spots were hotly contested. Here’s the breakdown of the victors:

  1. Warehouse Guy: Took the crown with 13 correct picks and 19 tie-breaking points.
  2. Alyssa Shifflett: A close second, matching Warehouse Guy’s 13 picks but with 19 tie-breaking points as well.
  3. Dawson 16: Secured the third spot with 13 accurate picks and 18 tie-breaking points.

Initially, the leaderboard showcased a tie for the top spot. Warehouse Guy and Alyssa Shifflett were neck and neck, both boasting 13 correct picks and 19 tie-breaking points. This is where “the Foley” tie-breaking method was called into action. After delving into the timestamps, it was revealed that Warehouse Guy had the upper hand by submitting their picks a whole day ahead of Alyssa. As a result, the coveted Foley point went to Warehouse Guy, propelling them into first place.

What this week has underlined is the razor-thin margins at play. Every decision matters, from the over/under picks to the crucial results of the point spread. This week serves as a potent reminder that timing and strategy can be game-changers. It’s not just about predicting the winning team; it’s about understanding the nuances, strategizing with the spreads, and sometimes… just being a bit quicker on the draw.
