SALES TAX QUESTION ON BALLOT IN PARKVILLE
In addition to a proposed use tax, a second tax proposal will be on the ballot in November for voters inside the city limits of Parkville.
Parkville Board of Aldermen recently voted to place a ballot question proposing a local sales tax be imposed on marijuana sales. The proposal calls for a three percent tax on the retail sales of adult use marijuana.
The election on both the marijuana tax and use tax for Parkville is set for Tuesday, Nov. 7.
State law allows municipalities to impose a local sales tax at a rate of three percent. The question must be approved by voters to take effect.
Dean Katerndahl, mayor, told The Landmark there is currently one adult use marijuana retail sales outlet operating within the city limits of Parkville.
The mayor said city officials have no estimate on how much revenue the proposed tax would bring in annually.
The proposal requires a majority approval by the qualified voters of Parkville in an election.
According to a policy report prepared by John Mautino, city attorney for Parkville, “if a majority of the qualified voters voting at the election shall vote in favor of this ordinance, then the sales tax approved by voters shall be in full force and effect on Nov. 7, 2023.”
The tax “shall be collected in addition to any other sales taxes imposed by the city and shall not replace or repeal any other sales tax,” according to the document.
