NORTH OF 64TH STREET

The driver of a 2019 Volkswagen Beetle was killed on Interstate 29 in southern Platte County after his vehicle rear-ended another vehicle north of 64th Street at 11:54 a.m. on Friday, June 23.

Killed as a result of the three-car crash was Michael R. Mahoney, 70, of Olathe, Kan. Suffering minor injuries was Nancy C. McGuire, 59, of Platte City, whose 2011 Dodge 1500 was struck in the rear by Mahoney’s VW Beetle. After being struck by the Volkswagen, McGuire’s vehicle spun and struck the rear of a third vehicle, a 2017 Cadillac XT5 driven by Paula Floyd, 59, of Kansas City, who was not injured.

Mahoney was transported by Kansas City Fire to North Kansas City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:15 p.m., a little more than an hour after the crash.

There is ongoing construction in areas near 72nd Street on I-29, which is just north of 64th Street where the crash occurred. The construction has been causing traffic slowdowns at certain times of the day. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the vehicles driven by Floyd and McGuire were slowing for traffic when McGuire’s Dodge was struck in the rear by Mahoney’s vehicle.
