Grant sought to connect trails to Platte City

WOULD LINK NEIGHBORHOODS TO CIVIC AREAS

The Platte County Parks and Recreation Department has applied for a grant to connect the residential neighborhoods south of Platte City with the Platte Valley Plaza commercial and civic area, including the library, community center, and medical offices.

“It is difficult for families with little kids to walk or ride bikes from several neighborhoods south of Platte City to the area with the library and YMCA,” said Joe Vanover, second district county commissioner. “We hope this project will make it safer and more common for families to walk or ride along 136th Street and Running Horse Road.”

The Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) recently asked area cities and counties to submit grant applications for the Carbon Reduction Program. The program is designed to reduce transportation emissions, defined as carbon dioxide emissions, from on-road sources.

Platte City supported the county government’s grant application by providing a letter which says, “The proposed shared-use path extension and crosswalk will serve as a vital link, connecting numerous residences to the Platte County Community Center, the greater trail network, public school campus, and various activity centers.”

Platte County’s application for Running Horse and 136th Street is open for public comment. All comments are due by June 30 at https://gis2.marc2.org/carbonreduction/publiccomment.html
