FRAUDSTERS ARE ‘SPOOFING’ PHONE NUMBERS, TELLING FOLKS THEY OWE A FINE
The Platte County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of a scam where fraudsters are calling citizens and pretending to be members of the Platte County Sheriff’s Office.
The fraudsters have been “spoofing” phone numbers, so it appears that they are calling from the Sheriff’s Office or the Platte County Courthouse.
The fraudsters tell people that they have missed jury duty and need to pay a fine using a payment app such as Zelle. In some instances, they have even told people that they will put them on a Zoom call with a judge.
The Platte County Jury Commissioner summons people for jury duty through the mail. Neither the Platte County Sheriff’s Office nor the Platte County Jury Commissioner contacts people by phone to have them pay fines. If you need to contact the Platte County Jury Commissioner, you may call the office at 816-858-3441.
The public is reminded not to give personal information over the phone. If you are unsure if you are speaking with a legitimate official, we encourage citizens to contact the entity/company directly through trusted numbers to verify the legitimacy of a call.
