30 Years Ago–September 4, 1992

There are some new faces in the classrooms at Platte County R-3 schools this year. Teachers new to the district include Rod O’Connor, band; Barbara Goydas, remedial reading; Linda Prout, third grade; Jim Dunn, English; and Stuart Sullinger, math. Classes for the 1992-93 school year begin Monday, Aug. 31.

LeAnn Murphy was crowned the 1992 Missouri State Fair Queen at a coronation ceremony at the fair on Friday afternoon. Twenty-year-old Murphy is the daughter of James and Gloria Murphy from Hannibal. Sponsored by the Marion County Junior Fair, Murphy competed against 57 young women from all parts of Missouri.

Preliminary figures show a big jump in enrollment in the Platte County R-3 School District. Don Siegrist, R-3 superintendent, reports enrollment on the first day of classes at R-3 on Monday was 1,630, which is 100 more than the 1,530 that were enrolled on the final day of classes last spring. Siegrist said the increase is “across the board,” more at the elementary and middle school levels than at the high school. The high school enrollment is up slightly, though not as much as lower grades. Kindergarten enrollment was down slightly. Siegrist said R-3 facilities are equipped to handle the increased numbers with no difficulty. Schools officials had projected an enrollment increase of only 50 students. Siegrist attributed much of the increase to the growth in the south end of the district.
