The Platte City Friends of the Arts (PCFA) and Harper Haus Music Company (HHMC) announce that Platte City native Lukas Lockett is the winner of the 2nd Saturday Summer Concert Series People’s Choice Singing Contest.

Lukas Lockett is a 2022 graduate of Platte County High School and has been singing in choirs since kindergarten. Lukas plans to study vocal music education at William Jewell in the fall. Brian VonGlahn is Lukas’ private voice lesson instructor.

The contest, which happened July 9 at the Platte County Courthouse on Main Street Platte City, was the second concert in the series sponsored by the Platte City Friends of the Arts and the City of Platte City. The Singing Contest, sponsored by HHMC, was scheduled to happen during the June concert but was postponed due to storms in the area.

“I am thrilled to be able to give back to the community that has vested so much into the growth of Harper Haus,” said Michelle Harper, HHMC founder and studio director. Harper, herself an accomplished singer, teaches voice, piano, drama and theater, and offers classes for all ages at the studio located at 200 Main Street, Platte City.

Lockett, a 2022 graduate of Platte County R-3, sang the 1965 hit L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole. The $500 scholarship, donated by Harper Haus, will be paid directly to William Jewell College, where Lukas will attend in the fall and study vocal music education.

“Mr. VonGlahn, as my voice instructor, has helped me immensely,” stated Lukas. “I have no idea where I would be without his coaching and confidence in me to perform. I also want to credit Ms. Fisher, assistant director, for helping me with my other solos, and Mr. Bobela, a student teacher, who also helped me. And, of course, my family.”

Also competing was Ashlyn Helmich, recent graduate of West Platte, and Kyla Spradlin, a recent North Platte graduate. The contest is sponsored by an area business and facilitated by PCFA. About 100 people voted.

FINAL CONCERT OF THE SERIES
The last concert in the series is Saturday, Aug. 13 when Platte County’s own Steven Bankey and The Flatlanders perform at the courthouse.
Wells Bank of Platte City will give away free water and ice cream and the Gene Felling Family will be serving up free hotdogs and chips, while supplies last. Andrea Denning of Denning’s Stained Glass will be selling and displaying items from her store in Platte City. La Cabana will be serving food and the street will be blocked off for a pop-up car show.
