Rodeo, demo derby, mud-a-thon are prime events

Experience community spirit and family-oriented activities at this year’s Platte County Fair starting Wednesday, July 20.

This four-evening event features live music, an old-fashioned carnival, competitive rodeo action, two nights of demolition derby, and a mud-a-thon.

The event is held at the Platte County Fairgrounds in Tracy.

Perhaps nothing showcases the wilder aspects of the local heritage better than the rodeo events held at the grandstand. Everything from bareback riding and steer wrestling to bull riding and team roping, the competition spreads excitement throughout the fairgrounds.

Additionally, girls’ barrel racing, breakaway roping, and open calf roping performances will keep the crowd saying: “I need to see that again.”

The fair is also about highlighting young people engaged in 4-H. Their agricultural talent and showmanship will be displayed during the junior livestock show and peewee sheep and goat show.

But the fair wouldn’t be complete without its fair queen. The Platte County Fair’s queen contest will be held Wednesday, July 20 at the Platte Pavilion. The winning recipient will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship opportunity from the Missouri Western State University (MWSU) Foundation and $500 from the Platte County Fair. Contestants are interviewed by a panel of judges and encouraged to participate in a talent or speech presentation.

In order to compete, ladies must be between the ages of 17 and 22 and reside in Platte County.

Fairgoers looking for a tall cold one should head over to the Bremer Beer Stand located inside the Wayne Bremer Building or the Grand Beer Stand. The Krautburger Stand and Mildred Knighton Café will surely tempt fairgoers’ taste buds with their kraut burgers or cheeseburgers.

To take part in the Platte County Fair, simply purchase general admission tickets online or at the gate. Entry will cost $15 and parking is free. Kids 12 and under are free.
