At Parkville
A Kansas City man allegedly crashed into another motor vehicle, while attempting to flee Parkville police officers at high rates of speed.
The Platte County Prosecutor’s Office charged Sergio Gonzalez Jr., age 39, of Kansas City in Platte County, with one felony count of resisting arrest and fleeing in a manner that created a substantial risk of serious injury or death to other persons.
At about 1 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 14, prosecutors say a law enforcement officer observed a white Chevrolet Malibu traveling westbound on Tom Watson Parkway at twelve miles over the speed limit. When the officer conducted a traffic stop, he observed a strong odor of alcohol and marijuana permeating from the vehicle, according to court documents. The officer also noticed that the driver, Sergio Gonzalez, kept the gear lever in drive with his foot pressed against the brake, states court documents.
To conduct a field sobriety test, the officer asked Gonzalez to step out of the vehicle, but Gonzalez told the officer “No.” That’s when Gonzalez was informed that he was under arrest and ordered out of the vehicle. Gonzalez allegedly hit the gas and sped off at a high rate of speed. The officer pursed Gonzalez as he traveled northbound on Hwy. 9 and west on NW Winter Ave. until he lost sight of the vehicle.
A short time later, the officer spotted Gonzalez’s vehicle crashed into another motor vehicle at the intersection of NW 73rd Terrace and NW Winter Avenue. Gonzalez had already left the scene of the accident on foot, according to court documents.
The suspect’s vehicle was towed by Arrow Tow and impounded because of a violation of the law. Inside the vehicle, police recovered two bags of marijuana and wrapped THC edible items. On Tuesday, Jan. 25, Gonzalez attempted to retrieve his cell phone from impoundment, but was instead arrested and taken into custody.
During police questioning, Gonzalez said he couldn’t recall the events that unfolded on Jan. 14, because he was in a diabetic coma. Gonzalez remains in custody at the Platte County Detention Center and his request for a bond modification has been denied. He is scheduled to appear before Platte County Circuit Court Judge Abe Shafer at 8: 30 a.m. on Feb. 8.
