div class=”postie-post”>Word that the sky was falling–or at least a smokestack–in downtown Parkville turned out to be a false alarm Friday afternoon. The incident generated some excited conversation in the downtown area as the New Year’s holiday weekend approached and even sparked some television news coverage, but turned out to be nothing more than a conversation piece. The smokestack that sits atop the Power Plant restaurant itself was not falling, it was determined, though some potentially loose tiles from the stack could prove a bit dangerous to persons and objects below and steps were taken to barricade a “fall zone” of sorts.
Saying she is leaving so she can “be a mom” to her children ages 21 and 16, Tanya Bates has turned in her resignation as city clerk for Platte City. Bates started as city clerk in June of 1997, which means she is leaving just six months short of 10 years on the job. “I’ll miss everyone. I know that’s like the beauty queen answer,” she said with a laugh. Her last day on the job is scheduled to be Jan. 23.
A Platte City woman became embroiled in an argument with her roommate in a downtown block of High Street early last Wednesday morning, took off in the roommate’s car and then intentionally hit the roommate’s 72-year-old father, Platte City police officials allege.
