Four people were injured in a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 29 in southern Platte County Thursday evening, Dec. 16.

The crash occurred in the southbound lanes at about the three mile marker of the interstate. Missouri State Highway Patrol officials say there was heavy traffic congestion in that area when the crash occurred at 5:39 p.m.

According to the crash report, a 2013 Buick driven by Trasi L. Sorrells, 44, of Kansas City overtook and struck the rear of a 2014 Ford driven by Aaron M. McGaughy, 50, of St. Joseph. Then a third vehicle, a 2010 Hyundai driven by Peggy L. Frerking, 77, of Concordia, overtook and struck the rear of Sorrells’ Buick. Then a fourth vehicle, a 2009 Jeep driven by Chicka J. Ikwuwunna, 65, of Kansas City, became involved in the crash.

Three of the drivers–McGaughy, Sorrells and Frerking–were transported to North Kansas City Hospital with what the highway patrol describes as minor injuries. Also taken to the hospital with minor injuries was Dawn M. McGaughy, 48, of St. Joseph, a passenger in Aaron McGaughy’s vehicle.

Ikwuwunna was not injured.

Damage to Sorrells’ Buick is listed as “extensive” in the crash report. Damage to the other vehicles is listed as “moderate.”

Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Northmoor Police Department.
