The Rotary Club of South Platte, working with the Philippine Medical Society of Greater Kansas City and the Philippine Nurses Association of Kansas City, is gearing up for its 14th annual Philippine Medical Mission. The group is set to leave Kansas City on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007. This medical mission will journey to the Orani District Hospital, Bataan Province, Philippines.
About 40 railroad cars derailed at Iatan in Platte County last Wednesday morning about 10 a.m. The train was hauling a large load of coal bound for use at the Iatan power plant. The train was traveling about 48 mph when it derailed, according to a BNSF spokesman. There were no injuries. Freezing rain was falling heavily in the area at the time of the derailment but weather has not yet been attributed as a cause of the derailment. About 3,800 tons of coal was strewn around the accident site. All 40 coal cars were damaged, some so badly that they will be scrapped. The railroad tracks run along Hwy. 45. According to an incident report, the driver of the train failed to brake at a necessary time, forcing the train’s computerized emergency brake system to engage.
The Platte City Board of Aldermen voted to approve a roof replacement over a three-story section of one of the older portions of the Civic Center. Each section of the roof has been systematically replaced over the past five years except for the section in question.
