It’s time to head back to the courtroom. Platte City’s aggressive involuntary annexation effort is facing another legal obstacle, just two months after its previous attempt was forced off the ballot by a successful challenge that resulted in a settlement between the city and a plaintiff over an apparent violation of the state’s open meetings law. The latest lawsuit was filed Wednesday morning and seeks to kill the current annexation effort on the grounds the city failed to notify one of the property owners whose land is being involuntarily annexed. The city is required by law to notify all affected property owners. Local attorney Bob Shaw filed the legal action on behalf of clients Douglas J. Yeager and Linda J. Cuquet.
Park University did not obtain constructions permits to renovate the Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel in the summer of 2006. The university told The Landmark the work was “minor” but the Southern Platte County fire marshal disagrees. The $280,000 renovation left the chapel with multiple fire code violations which the university must correct.
Jeff Roe, experienced Republican consultant, will be the guest speaker at the First Friday meeting for the Platte Republican Association. Roe has headed several campaigns and recently formed Axiom Strategies, a full-service Republican political consulting, public affairs and public relations firm. The group will meet Friday night at the Granfalloon off Barry Road and I-29.
