A Platte City man allegedly smashed a retractable sunroof of a Chevy Colorado pickup to sell and deprive the owner of its possession.
The Platte County Prosecutor’s Office charged Isaiah T. Pearson, 19, with tampering with a motor vehicle and property damage.
At about 8:22 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21, officers were called to a Platte County farm to investigate a reported vehicle theft. While en route, officers observed a truck matching the description of the stolen vehicle traveling on Anderson Road, just north of the Guy B. Park Conservation Area.
According to court documents, the officer pulled up behind Pearson on Anderson Road, deployed his emergency signals, and conducted a traffic stop. When the officer told Pearson the vehicle had been reported stolen, Pearson denied any wrongdoing, claiming he had received permission from the vehicle’s owner to drive the truck.
He also claimed the truck was on his property and it doesn’t amount to stealing.
Court documents allege Pearson gained access inside by shattering the sunroof of the vehicle. Shards of glass were scattered all over the vehicle’s interior, according to police.
As of Tuesday morning, Pearson remains in custody at the Platte County Detention Center on a $5,000 bond.
The arresting officer alleges Pearson poses a danger to society and repeatedly slipped his handcuffs from his backside to his front, according to court documents.
A bond hearing for Pearson was set for this week.
