Had he not been successful in getting a budget revision in his department salary lines approved by the county commission, it appears Platte County Sheriff Richard Anderson was primed to pursue legal action against the commissioners. After much discussion and a split vote of 2-1, the county commission on Thursday approved Anderson’s request of the funds from lines within his budget. Anderson’s request did not ask for an increase in his overall budget, only to adjust funds within various lines pertaining to salaries. Commissioners Betty Knight and Tom Pryor eventually voted in favor of allowing Anderson’s request. Commissioner Jim Plunkett voted no.
Mayor Dave Brooks will declare Oct. 24 as “Jason Brown Day” in Platte City. Brooks will present Brown with a ceremonial key to Platte City. Brown, the Missouri 30th District state representative, is a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves. On Oct. 5, Brown was struck in the chest with a 7.76 caliber round shot by an Iraqi insurgent sniper. The bullet entered Brown’s left lung but his lung did not collapse. The bullet remains inside his lung. Brown is currently at home in Platte City on a 30-day convalescent leave.
Platte County Pachyderms will hear from Otto Castro, a naturalized American citizen from Cuba on the topic of immigration on Nov. 2. The gathering begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Touche night club in the Parkville Commons Shopping Center at Hwy. 9 and Hwy. 45.
