And Art in the Park also planned
The Platte City Friends of the Arts Visual Arts Committee and Platte County Parks and Recreation are looking for artists and art related vendors for the upcoming Art in the Park and Plein Air Paint Out happening Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24 and 25.
The Plein Air Paint Out will happen Friday, Sept. 24 in historic downtown Platte City from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. and also Saturday, Sept. 25 from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Platte Ridge Park, 17130 MO Hwy 371, Platte City, MO 64079. This new event is in honor of Missouri’s Bicentennial and is in conjunction with the 6th Annual Art in the Park, happening on Saturday Sept. 25th from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. at Platte Ridge Park.
“Plein Air is such a great way to experience art. The whole process unfolds before the audience in real time. You can see the decisions they are making with their brush, you can ask them questions…as long as you don’t stop the process too much, of course. But it’s a more immersive way to experience two-dimensional art. Come out and enjoy fresh air painting, you won’t regret it.” stated Dori Thomas, president of Platte City Friends of the Arts.
Art in the Park, a free family event, will feature art of all types, including music and dance, and food and activities for all ages. Booth space is free to qualifying artists and art vendors. “We are looking for artists who would like to teach, talk, or demonstrate how they create, or anyone offering creative make and takes,” explained Brenda Lino, who is committee chairperson for Platte City Friends of the Arts Art in the Park.
It is also free to participate in the Plein Air Paint Out. Artists of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to paint and will register on the day of the event. Artists should bring everything they need to create including easel, canvas, paint, and brushes. The final works will be auctioned off to benefit Platte City Friends of the Arts and Platte County Historical Society on Saturday at Art in the Park.
Art in the Park began in 2015, and is a partnership between Platte County Parks and Recreation, Platte County Community Center North/YMCA, and Platte City Friends of the Arts. The first two years the event was held in Platte Ridge Park, but in 2017 a lightning storm forced the event inside.
The event is held rain or shine. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at the Platte County Community Center North/YMCA at 3101 Running Horse Road, Platte City.
“When parks and recreation asked the Friends to help again this year we immediately said yes,” stated Debra Brechbiel, PCFA public relations manager. “This event is as important to the area artists as it is to the residents of the county. It’s going to be a great fall event that everyone can enjoy.”
The Platte City Friends of the Arts began in 1999 with a small group of local volunteers who care about promoting and preserving art of all kinds in Platte County. The non-profit group produces and supports visual art shows for both school age and adults and has a variety of events throughout the year.
