Sports fields in Platte Landing

Platte Landing Park

EDITOR:

My wife and I read the article about Parkville’s plan to use the grant money to help build a sports complex and create a significant parking lot in the area that is now Platte Landing Park. After reading the article, we both thought “here we go again.”

It is a fact that the citizenry of Parkville, to the best of our knowledge, have not been asked if this is what they want their park (directly beside the wetlands area and the dog park) to become primarily a sports complex. As we have stated before, both my wife and I voted in favor of the tax increase to maintain and improve our parks. Had we known about the proposed sports complex we would have voted no and we believe that many citizens if they had known of the intent of building a sports complex in Platte Landing Park would also have voted in the negative.

The Parkville government seems to want to convince everyone that by voting yes they were voting in favor of a sports complex. On the ballot, there was no mention of a sports complex.

Here is exactly what was on the ballot:

“Shall the City of Parkville, Missouri, be authorized to impose a sales tax of one-half of one percent (1/2 of 1%) for the purpose of providing funding for local parks including land facilities, and operations for the City for a period of ten (10) years?”

As we have stated many times, we are in favor of building adequate sports fields for the youth in Parkville. We are not in favor of building the complex in Platte Landing Park. It appears to us the City of Parkville is not interested in determining what their citizens want.
