Rogers Strickland complimented and thanked Kansas City baseball legend Buck O’Neil on the pitcher’s mound Saturday, just prior to the start of a benefit game between the Weston Royals and the Ghost Players of Dyersville, Iowa. O’Neil attended the very first benefit game back in 2001 and has been back every summer since, Strickland said. The Ghost Players won the game 10-6.
John Andre and Ron Porter, both aldermen who were defeated in re-election races this past April, have formed an ad hoc group of Platte City citizens bent on doing what they must to ensure the city’s annexation issues pass this November, and in February, if they get that far. About 15 people attended a meeting in one of the waiting rooms at the Heartland Clinic of Platte City on Tuesday night. Keith Moody, city administrator, and Mayor Dave Brooks attended, as did alderman Lee Roy Van Lew. Lawyers Susan McCabe and Bruce Ray attended the meeting on behalf of the law firm Williams & Campo of Lee’s Summit. They are the third and fourth lawyers the city has had attend annexation meetings, all employees of Williams & Campo.
Vandals broke into the West Platte High School in Weston early Saturday morning and did significant damage to various high value equipment and to the inside of the school generally, as well as to the football stadium. Damage is $35,000 or less, according to school officials.
