Platte County Sheriff’s Department deputies issued 96 citations over the July 4th weekend and made 54 arrests.
The counting period for those numbers ran July 1 through July 5, said Major Erik Holland. The most common citations issued were for speeding and careless and imprudent driving, he said. Five DWI arrests were made, one person was cited for leaving the scene of an accident, two domestic assaults investigated, two stolen autos, two for unlawful possession of a firearm, one resisting arrest, a marijuana possession and multiple disturbances were responded to by officers.
Probably not coincidentally, Holland said the July 4th holiday is typically a time for increased alcohol consumption among the public.
One incident involving the alleged sexual assault of a child is also under investigation by the department, Holland said.
The dozens of arrests were in unrelated incidents. The majority of arrests were of people with outstanding warrants.
“Deputies go on calls encountering people and finding they have an outstanding warrant. Our court systems have asked us to bring these people in,” Holland said, of the post-COVID uptick in outstanding warrants and resulting arrests.
Twenty one of the arrests were for outstanding Platte County warrants, four were for persons wanted in a different state, and eight were warrants from elsewhere in Missouri.
Holland reported that two deputies were assaulted while dealing with disturbances and suffered minor injuries while apprehending suspects resisting arrest. A third deputy was involved in a minor car accident that is being investigated by the highway patrol.
“It was a very busy weekend, but at the end of it everyone was safe,” Holland remarked.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported seven fatal vehicle crashes over the holiday weekend, none of them in Platte County. The patrol reported making 144 arrests for DWI across the state.
