The Platte County R-3 Board of Education voted unanimously to transfer the district’s membership from the Midland Empire Conference to the Suburban Conference. Athletic director Phil Dorman said the advantages will include less travel time for away games, less fuel expense, good competition and strong rivalries, future Platte County high schools would gain automatic acceptance into the league and double round robin schedules.
“We have a drug problem at Platte County High School. And I think every high school in America does,” said Dick Modin, school board president at Platte County R-3. His remarks came after a move to fire June Spinner, high school lunch clerk and secretary, who has been charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana. School officials said they have no reason to believe that Spinner sold marijuana to Platte County students on or off school property. Spinner is accused of having distributed marijuana from her home in Weston. Fellow school board members batted the topic around a bit, though the intent of the conversation was not to take any specific action.
