Selection of a firm to perform architectural services for a new police department/City Hall in Platte City is moving forward.
A city facilities committee this week recommended to the full board of aldermen to choose the firm Hoefer Welker. Fee is $359,740 plus expenses.
Hoefer Welker was recommended through a competitive qualification process as the architectural firm best qualified to design the new police station/administration building at 224-228 Marshall Road.
In December, the city purchased the 4.2 acre property at 224-228 Marshall Road as the site of the new police station/City Hall. The project has a construction budget of $3.2 million with a total project budget of $4.2 million. The budget allows $1 million for property acquisition, demolition and design.
The city purchased the property for $800,000 from Carl Myers, BKJ Inc. and Carl Myers dba Platte Professional and Dental Building. The total price of $800,000 included a $700,000 payment by the city combined with a $100,000 donation of property value from Dr. Carl Myers to the city, so the city’s net cash outlay for the purchase was $700,000.
The city has plans to renovate a 4,400 sq. ft. building (2,200 on each floor) constructed in 1980. Meanwhile, the 6,100 sq. ft building toward the rear of the property that was constructed in 1960 will be demolished and will be the site for the new police station/City Hall.
The architect’s scope of work will include to develop a site plan and landscape plan, design of the new City Hall/police station, design interior renovations for the existing building, provide professional construction support, etc.
The total project budget of $4.2 million was established in 2019, says DJ Gehrt, city administrator. A rapid increase in building materials since that tiime may require a reduction in buildng size or project cost adjustment prior to construction, Gehrt says.
