COVID forces some adjustments but once again the annual Shop With A Deputy event accomplishes its goal

Sheriff department program is a big hat

COVID can’t stop the holiday spirit, at least as far as the Platte County Sheriff Department’s annual Shop With A Deputy program.

On Saturday, the sheriff’s department and the Weatherby Lake Police Department distributed presents to some Platte County families in need, said Major Erik Holland of the sheriff’s department.

“This year instead of taking kids shopping, we worked with the schools in Platte County to identify families in need and obtained shopping lists for the children,” he said.

Due to COVID-19, law enforcement personnel then went shopping for the goods without the children present.

The program is funded entirely with donations from the business community and private citizens, Holland explained.

“Two hundred fifty dollars was spent on each child, with $180 going toward clothing and $70 toward toys and games,” Holland said.

Each family also received a food box with a turkey to make a holiday meal.

“A special thank you to all the citizens who donated to the Shop With A Deputy program this year. Even in the height of the pandemic the charity of our citizens is amazing,” Holland remarked. “Their support is what enables us to bring joy to these children.”

Holland said 38 children from 20 different families were assisted through the program this year.
