Don’t give cost of living allowances to elected officeholders mid-term. Any cost of living allowances should be accumulated and only granted to each elected official upon the beginning of a new term of office. Platte County counselor Bob Shaw rendered that opinion to the county commission Thursday. His legal opinion may soon become a point of reference for other counties in the state.
The second time was the charm for a Platte City sales tax proposal. Voters in the city on Tuesday approved a 3/8 cent sales tax for street improvements by a margin of 220 in favor to 194 opposed, or 53% to 47%. Only 14.41 % of Platte City’s registered voters cast ballots.
Weeks of negotiations between Cox Rabius Development LLC, the developer of the proposed Shoppes at North Gate at I-29 and Main Street in Platte City, and the Platte County R-3 School District has led to an agreement in principle. Cox Rabius has offered to pay $133,000 per year to the school district during the life of a proposed TIF. The contribution plus current property tax revenue will equate to almost $2.8 million over 20 years.
