I-29 crash kills one, injures three others

Four vehicles were involved in an apparent chain reaction crash on Interstate 29 in Platte County on Friday, Sept. 18 a wreck that killed one person and injured three others.

The crash occurred on I-29 at about mile marker 23, which is two miles south of the Camden Point exit and three miles north of Tracy.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a southbound 2012 Ford F-150 driven by Cordel P. Johnson, 22 of Bolivar, struck three other southbound vehicles at 11:53 a.m.

The crash report indicates Johnson’s vehicle struck a 2012 Ford Fusion driven by Rachel M. Noll, 22, of Desoto, Kan.; a 2012 Chevrolet Impala driven by 27-year-old Shelby Peterman of St. Joseph; and a 2009 Lincoln MKZ driven by 72-year-old Lela A. Allen of Kansas City.

Peterman was killed in the crash. A one-year-old boy in Peterman’s car suffered only minor injuries.

A two year girl in Allen’s vehicle suffered only minor injuries. Allen suffered what are described as moderate injuries and was taken to Mosaic in St. Joseph.

For several hours after the crash, southbound I-29 traffic was diverted to Hwy. 371 and through Platte City, back onto the interstate.

Assisting the Missouri State Highway Patrol at the scene was the Platte County Sheriff’s Department.
