The Platte County Historical Society is sponsoring a self-guided “Fall Selfie Scavenger Hunt Through History” during September and October.
This combined walking and driving tour is designed for families with children and anyone interested in an outdoor activity tied to local history. The tour includes options for taking selfies at various locations and QR codes for accessing online media with smartphones.
The historical society explains that this is a scavenger hunt because it challenges participants to look closely to uncover details at different stops. Most are found within walking distance of Main Street in Platte City but additional stops include Platte City United Methodist Church (N Hwy, Platte City), Weston Red Barn Farm (Hwy. 273, Weston) and Alldredge Orchard (N Hwy, Platte City).
This activity is themed to apples which were a significant crop in this region during the 19th and early 20th century.
Pioneers planted many varieties of apples here during westward migration and family farms often included a small orchard. This was the case of the farm owned by Thomas Perry, sheriff of Platte County from 1909-1912. At one time the Perry family lived in the mini mansion which is today’s Ben Ferrel Platte County Museum.
Owned and operated by the Platte County Historical Society, the museum is the final stop on the tour.
On Saturdays, Sept. 12, 19, 26 and Oct. 3 and 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m, on the museum’s front porch, participants can enter to win one of two storybooks on the legend of Johnny Appleseed and can participate in an I-spy activity in the museum yard.
Printed copies of the Fall Selfie Scavenger Hunt are available through October at the museum in an information box on the front porch. A limited supply will be available at Alldredge Orchard and Weston Red Barn Farm during their regular business hours.
