Metro Umpires awarded $25,000 CARES grant

Parkville Chamber of Commerce gets $24,000

A youth baseball umpires group is the biggest winner in the latest round of “small business grants” approved by the Platte County Commission on Monday, Aug. 24.

Others awarded at the latest session included the Parkville Chamber of Commerce and the Platte City Chamber of Commerce.

Using federal CARES dollars distributed to the county, Platte County commissioners established what they’re calling Platte County CARES Small Business Grant Program. Roughly $12.2 million in federal money was distributed to the county through the state treasurer’s office. The state treasurer at the time asked the county commission to pass roughly $6 million on to the City of Kansas City, based on the fact half of the county’s population is comprised of residents within the city limits of Kansas City. The county commission has declined. The commission has also to this point declined to pass any of the federal aid to the Platte County Health Department.

Metro Umpires was awarded a CARES grant in the amount of $25,000. According to its web site, Metro Umpires Kansas City “provides sporting officials for the Kansas City metropolitan and surrounding areas” and can supply “officials for all levels of play.”
