Bond reduction sought for local shooting suspect

Armondo Campbell

Incident at Quality Inn in Platte City

A Lenexa, Kan. man accused of shooting a man in the abdomen inside a Platte City hotel is seeking a reduction in bond.

Currently, inmate Armondo Campbell is being held at the Platte County Detention Center without bond.

The 29-year-old’s attorney filed a motion for a bond reduction on behalf of his client on Friday, Aug. 21.

Campbell was charged back in November with felony assault in the first degree.

According to the probable cause statement, Armondo Campbell was called to the Quality Inn hotel in Platte City to check on his sister following a physical altercation she had with her boyfriend.

Campbell stuck around and began drinking alcohol with his sister inside the hotel room. According to court documents, sometime later that evening, his sister’s boyfriend returned to the room and a verbal altercation erupted.

During the argument, Campbell allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot his sister’s boyfriend in the left side of his abdomen, court documents allege. The impact forced the victim against the wall, which he used as stability to stand back up and flee to the lobby.

The victim collapsed at the front desk and emergency personnel were called to the scene.

At the hospital, doctors discovered the bullet had struck the victim’s liver and kidney and was lodged inside his abdomen.

“Further the injuries caused both lower lobes of his lungs to collapse,” a detective wrote in the probable cause statement. Due to the severity of his injuries, the victim spent multiple days in an intensive care unit heavily sedated.

Relevant evidence in this case includes a .9 mm shell casing found inside the hotel room and a confirmed identification in a photographic lineup.

Campbell has multiple listed addresses and is considered a flight risk, court documents say. A bond hearing will be held this week.
