Several trusses being placed in the roof of a strip mall under construction in Platte City came tumbling down Wednesday morning, injuring four workers. The strip mall is being built by Andy Homoly Associates in the Platte Valley Plaza at 1302 Platte Falls Road, near the site of the new Sonic Restaurant. Homoly told authorities the construction workers were getting ready to brace a set of trusses when one got caught in the wind and started a “domino effect,” as one truss after another came down to the cement floor below. Northland Regional Ambulance District transported the injured to area hospitals.
Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd announced on Friday that his office has filed a case against Kansas attorney, Jan P. Helder, with using the Internet to try to entice a child for sexual conduct. Zahnd’s decision comes after U.S. District Judge Dean Whipple set aside a conviction ruling that under federal law Helder’s acts were not criminal. “I believe that in the end the federal court will reverse the district judge’s decision. However, we didn’t want to wait for the federal court to make its decision,” Zahnd stated.
Betty Knight has officially announced she will seek reelection for office. Knight announced her plan to seek reelection to her fourth term at the Platte County Republican Association Friday night.
