Quinton Lucas, mayor of Kansas City, was one of the leaders speaking at a press event hosted by Platte County Prosecutor Erc Zahnd on Monday, July 6 at the Platte County Administration Building. The mayor, area prosecutors and area sheriffs spoke on violent crime in the region. Among the speakers, in addition to Lucas and Zahnd, were Platte County Sheriff Mark Owen, Clay County Prosecutor Dan White, Clay County Sheriff Paul Vescovo, Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney Ron Holliday and Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett. Also on Monday, Gov. Mike Parson signed into law Senate Bill 600, which is legislation sponsored by State Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer of Platte County. SB 600 increases penalties for armed criminal action and prohibits probation for persons convicted of second degree murder or other violent offenses. “We’re asking the governor to give us tools to safeguard law abiding citizens in Missouri,” Zahnd said on Monday.
