A Kansas City man is accused of breaking into a Platte County residence and taking off with the family’s dog.

The Platte County Prosecutor’s Office charged Charles Chevalier, 41, with burglary in the second degree and stealing.

Chevalier remains in custody at the Platte County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond. His next court appearance is set for July 14.

According to court documents, the Platte County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting a prowler in the area of NW 70th Street, just east of North Congress playground.

An eyewitness told police he saw a stranger wearing blue jeans and a black Carhartt jacket leaving the neighbor’s home with a brown and white dog.

Police monitored the area and located a man, who matched the description, about a quarter mile away.

The suspect, later identified as Charles Chevalier, told police he was visiting his friend’s house and left with the dog out of fear of it getting out. But police discovered Chevalier allegedly gained entry inside the home by breaking the front door and letting himself inside.

The homeowner, who was not home at the time of the intrusion, told police Chevalier did not have permission to enter the home or take off with the family pet, the wheel barrel or the pair of gloves.

The dog and additional stolen items were recovered by police. During a pat down search, police say they also found a glass pipe and methamphetamine residue inside Chevalier’s pocket.

Court records reveal Chevalier has multiple warrants from various jurisdictions that span across the state line.
