Captured after he had caught a ride
A Kansas City man is being accused of breaking down a garage door to gain entry inside a Dearborn residence, where he attempted to remove a safe.
The Platte County Prosecutor’s Office charged 31-year-old Antoine Anderson with burglary in the second degree, tampering in the first degree, resisting a lawful stop and property damage in the first degree.
At 10:50 a.m. on Wednesday, June 17, a concerned citizen dialed 9-1-1 to report a burglary in progress inside a Dearborn residence. The suspects allegedly rammed the overhead garage door with a vehicle to gain entry inside the Dearborn residence.
When the concerned citizen drove to the shop area located behind the residence, to keep a more watchful eye, he observed at least two men on the steps of the rear entrance of the residence and a white Ford F-150 with out-of-state plates. At least one of the suspects was struggling to lift a safe.
The suspects apparently noticed someone watching them, because they dropped what they were doing and fled the scene in a “fast and erratic manner,” states the probable cause statement.
With police not yet on the scene, the concerned citizen tailed the suspects as they traveled southbound on Hwy. 371 to Route U. Eventually, the suspects entered onto Interstate 29, heading south toward the I-29 corridor near the KCI International Airport.
A Platte County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed the white Ford F-150 traveling 33 miles over the speed limit in the southbound lanes of the interstate at the 112th Street exit.
“When the deputy activated his emergency lights and siren, the truck refused to stop,” states the probable cause statement. “The F-150 was confirmed to be a stolen truck from Overland Park.”
The driver attempted to elude police, sometimes traveling more than 40 miles over the posted speed limit, authorities say.
Police say in areas with heavy traffic, the getaway driver would travel onto the shoulder to zigzag past vehicles. When the suspect took the Barry Road exit, he quickly made a U-turn at NW Prairie View Road. This maneuver allowed the deputy to get a good look at the driver, later identified as Antoine Anderson.
“The driver continued to drive aggressively on Barry Road,” the document states.
Deputies briefly lost sight of the suspect’s vehicle when it turned right onto Roanridge, where traffic was heavy. As the suspects continued south along Roanridge, police were waiting with stop sticks at NW 72nd Street.
The stop sticks punctured both tires on the passenger side. Anderson only made it another few miles before the two flat tires prompted him to abandon the truck at a dead-end street inside the Tremont subdivision.
As they searched the area, police approached a vehicle to warn them about securing their home. Inside, a passenger was “sweating profusely,” and his clothes and hair were covered with leaves and sticks.
According to the driver, Anderson knocked on his door and requested a ride to downtown Kansas City. Anderson offered him a $100 bill in exchange for a ride. When police asked Anderson why he was covered in grass and sticks, Anderson said he was walking through the woods before asking the homeowner for a ride.
Anderson is being held inside the Platte County Detention Center on a $500,000 cash only bond.
