U.S. Army Master Sgt. David Royer, right, who lives in unincorporated Platte County near Platte City, will be honored and awarded by Platte City Mayor Frank Offutt, left, at the June 23 meeting of the Platte City Board of Aldermen. The meeting, which will be the final session for the retiring mayor, will be held at the Platte City Civic Center to assist with social distancing requirements. Royer is the soldier who stopped an active shooter on the Centennial Bridge between Leavenworth and Platte County on May 27 by driving his pickup at the shooter and pinning him under the vehicle. The shooter, identified as Jason R. Westrem of Houston Lake, has been charged with attempted first degree murder. Royer and his fiancee, Haley Sijela, and children have resided near Platte City the past few years. The Landmark caught up with Offutt and Royer after the two had met for lunch at the Pool Hall in downtown Platte City one day last week. The pair are holding a copy of The Landmark that contains a feature article on Royer’s heroic actions.
