After 45 years of teaching, Julia Thomson has retired to a farm near Lathrop. Her career began in rural schools in Atchison County. She also taught in Nodaway and Holt Counties before coming to Platte City where she taught 24 years. She was honored by the fourth grade classes on May 16 with a surprise program and was presented a watch, dogwood tree and many individual gifts. A number of former students and teaching associates were present.
Thursday morning, Gov. Kit Bond appointed Lorraine Williams of Dearborn to fill the unexpired term of assessor of Platte County. The vacancy was caused by the death of Francis Bell on May 22. Mrs. Williams has been office manager for Halferty & Roberts Fertilizer Co., at Dearborn. She is a native Platte Countian.
Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield announced that a new post office has been authorized for Parkville. “The Parkville Post Office,” he observed, “will be a major link in our newly-revitalized and modern postal service, aimed at an ultimate goal of next-day delivery of mail anywhere in the nation.”
Margaret Reynolds, daughter of Mrs. Ruth Reynolds, has been selected to participate in an eight-week National Science Foundation Summer Research Institute at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Margaret will be one of 20 outstanding Missouri students who have completed their junior year and rank in the top 5% of their high school class.
