Voters in the City of Dearborn will decide the fate of a question on whether to allow the keeping of up to six chickens per household in the city limits.
The proposal is on the ballot at the municipal election set for next Tuesday, June 2. Dearborn voters will cast ballots from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Robert Bryan Community Center, 202 N. Commercial St. in Dearborn.
The topic of potentially allowing chickens in the city limits has come up on multiple occasions at board of aldermen meetings in Dearborn, including about a year ago, and never advanced. The question on the ballot will read:
“Shall the City of Dearborn amend its code to permit keeping no more than six (6) chickens, but not roosters that crow, at any household and to prescribe the conditions under which said animals shall be maintained?”
The topic has come up at other area towns, as well. Recently, the Weston Board of Aldermen nixed the idea, declining to send the topic to the city’s planning and zoning commission for review. The idea being discussed at Weston was for up to six backyard chickens.
Also on Tuesday’s ballot, incumbent Jamie Morey is unopposed for Dearborn mayor. Three candidates are on the ballot for two alderman-at-large positions. Those candidates are Donald Swanstone, Jr., Breanna L. Cheadle, and Pat Downing.
