Select YMCA locations–including the two in Platte County– will officially reopen with some restrictions on Monday, May 18 after a temporary closure due to COVID-19 precautions.

“We are thrilled to begin reopening our facilities, welcoming back our members and the community, and getting back to what we do best – helping everyone reach their full potential,” said John Mikos, president of the YMCA of Greater Kansas City.

Among the centers opening at 8:30 a.m. on Monday are the Platte County Community Center South – Parkville, Platte County Community Center North – Platte City, the North Kansas City, Atchison Family YMCA/Cray Community Center and Cleaver Family YMCA.

Additional YMCA of Greater Kansas City locations may reopen as early as Monday, June 1.

The reopening of the centers comes with plenty of new restrictions for members, including no organized sports, no one under the age of 16, no guests, and no day passes.

Since health experts say COVID-19 remains a serious threat, hours of operation will be limited, and members are asked to limit their visit to one hour or less.

Centers will be open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.–10:30 a.m. to active older adults and 11 a.m.–7 p.m. to members ages 16 and older.

Centers will also be open on Saturday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday from noon-4 p.m. to members ages 16 and older.

During the first phase of reopening, pools, hot tubs, showers, and lockers will remain closed.

Members will have limited access to the fitness center, group exercise, personal training, restrooms, and gymnasium.

“Additional amenities and programs will be added in phases over the coming weeks,” said Mikos.

Additionally, the YMCA will continue to offer free virtual programs at KansasCityYMCA.org/OnlineWellness.

Safety Procedures

The centers have updated their safety and cleaning procedures, including screening everyone before entering facilities, increasing the frequency equipment is wiped down, redesigning an environment that supports social distancing, and requiring masks in common areas.

Masks will not be required while members are exercising, but members are encouraged to wipe down all equipment before and after their workout with disinfectant material.

Any persons exhibiting any cold or flu-like symptoms are encouraged to stay home.
