May 9, 1975

While working in the yard of 93-year-old Mrs. Bertha Dolan, who lives on a farm south of Platte City; Randy Simpson, a Scout in Troop 248 of Platte City, heard a scream come from the house, looked up and saw flames through the kitchen window. Dashing into the house, Randy found a skillet of grease on fire with flames ablaze. Having work gloves on, Randy grabbed the lid and placed it over the burning skillet, then escorted Mrs. Dolan into the yard to safety. Returning to the house, Randy wet down a towel and extinguished the fire in the smoke-filled kitchen.

In recognition of his meritorious action, the Boy Scouts of America, through the Heart of America Council, awarded the Certificate of Merit for his demonstration of Scouting’s best traditions. The award was presented at the Great Frontier District Dinner held April 18th at the Plaza Inn International. Randy is the fourteen-year-old son of Mrs. Margaret Kamphefner.
