Construction work to realign Prairie View Road with N. Chatham Avenue in southern Platte County has hit a snag.
Maggie Green, public information officer with public works for the City of Kansas City, said, “we have a warranty repair item from a previous water services project that is currently in the way of our contractor completing the final items on the reconstruction project.”
The warranty work, she says, got underway on Sept. 24 and should be completed within three weeks. If all goes well, the project should still be completed this fall. “We are working with the contractor on recovery schedule for completion of the final items that are weather dependent,” said Green.
Since a quarter-mile section of NW Prairie View Road north of 64th Street was closed on July 14, motorists have had to take a detour route along Cosby Avenue and Klamm Road.
The final phase of the project will completely relocate a section of the outer road (NW Prairie View Road) and realign it with the existing N. Chatham Avenue. Approximately 30 percent of the project will be funded with Surface Transportation Program (STP) federal funds.
Drivers are looking forward to the completion of the project, which should cut down on traffic congestion in and around 64th Street and reduce the number of car collisions. The realignment will also alleviate the 5 p.m. daily backup on the 64th Street exit ramp from I-29.
Additional safety improvements planned for the final stretch include, concrete sidewalks, bike lanes, storm sewers and street lighting.
The project is a partnership between the Missouri Department of Transportation and the City of Kansas City.
