Though plans are in the works to find a permanent location, it looks like the Platte City Police Department could be occupying its current spot for at least a couple more years.
The City of Platte City will soon be moving forward with extending the lease on the current police station on the courthouse square on Main Street.
Platte City has leased the 2,100 sq. ft building and associated rear parking area at 335 Main St. since 2013. An original one year lease was extended for additional terms in 2014, 2015 and again in 2017.
The newest extension, which has been forwarded to the board of aldermen for potential approval at a meeting later this month, calls for a two year deal in the amount of $1,550 per month.
The lease will run from May 1, 2019 through April 30, 2021. It includes an option for an additional one year term (202l-22) at $1,600 per month, said DJ Gehrt, city administrator.
Lease rate of $1,550 per month is an increase of $50 per month over the current deal. It equates to a rental fee of 74 cents per square foot.
Owner of the building, which is located at the southwest corner of Fourth and Main, is the MA Thalman Trust.
“The proposed lease term should be sufficient to house the police station until the new facility, funded by voters in April of 2019, can be completed,” said Gehrt.
Gehrt added that the optional extension for May 2021 to April 2022 “provides flexibility in the event the new facility is not complete when the two year lease term expires in 2021.”
The police department moved out of its former location in the Platte City Civic Center near Fourth and Hwy. 92 in April of 2013 due to structural failure of the floor joists and other environmental factors.
Platte City’s board of aldermen is expected to officially approve the new lease arrangement at its meeting on May 28.
