Platte County Commissioners this week voted unanimously to approve a temporary moratorium for all building permit fees associated with new residential and agricultural construction.
“This temporary building permit fee waiver will assist citizens seeking to improve their property. The program will help generate investment and economic activity in Platte County,”said Jason Brown, presiding commissioner.
The temporary moratorium waives building permit fees on new home construction, room additions, decks, barns, garages, and other residential or agricultural related property improvements for a period of six months or until the cumulative amount of building permit fees waived reaches $45,000.
The moratorium began March 1 and will terminate Aug. 31 unless the $45,000 fee amount is reached first.
“The housing market has been hit hard by the economic downturn. Waiving the permit fee at this time is a good way to help encourage investment,” said Kathy Dusenbery, first district county commissioner.
People seeking new construction are still required to obtain building permits prior to construction and complete the necessary inspections.
“We have reviewed building permit data from past years and included some common sense protections to ensure that the program stays within the budget,” said Jim Plunkett, second district commissioner.

The fee waiver only applies to new construction within the unincorporated portion of Platte County.
