The bridge was closed on January 14 after a routine inspection found deterioration to the bridge’s underside.

Repairs to the bridge began on Wednesday and are expected to be completed by Friday. The repairs include reinforcing the steel girders to support the structure.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will continue to inspect the bridge to ensure it remains safe for traffic.

The bridge was built in 1933 and carries nearly 2,000 vehicles per day. The bridge was reduced to one lane after minor deterioration was discovered.

The bridge was already scheduled to be included in the MoDOT Safe and Sound Bridge Improvement Program. The program will replace Missouri’s 802 worst bridges by Oct. 31, 2014.
