A string of crimes on Monday have all been connected to the same pair of criminals who arrived in Platte City.
The crimes began around 9:30 a.m. when someone broke the passenger side window of a vehicle parked in front of the CVS Pharmacy along 92 Highway.
According to Richard Sayles, Platte City police chief, the suspects were scared off before they could steal anything from the vehicle. The smashed window still caused problems for Marlene Robertson, 72, of Weston who owns the vehicle.
According to Sayles, the suspects then went to the Platte City Post Office and stole a purse from the vehicle of Beverly Cockrell, 58, of Platte City.
The suspects then went to the Platte City Public Works building and stole a 1997 white GMC Sierra pickup from the parking lot. The vehicle was reported stolen around 12:30 p.m. by the owner Nathanial Macko, 26, of Platte City.
Platte City police recovered the purse stolen from the post office in the parking lot of the public works building. A purse taken from the truck was recovered in a dumpster by public works employees at 1116 Branch Street.
According to Sayles, the two suspects came to Platte City in a van stolen from Kansas City, which was later recovered in a church parking lot at Third and Ferrell Streets.
Sayles said they have the suspects on video surveillance.
“We have a video tape of the CVS parking lot, and we’re going to be taking it to the FBI crime lab for help,” said Sayles.”
It was unclear as of Tuesday afternoon whether the stolen truck may have been involved in a wreck that occurred on I-29 around 10:50 a.m. when a white truck traveling north struck a Ford Taurus, causing the Taurus to careen into the center median. Both the driver and passenger in the Taurus had to be taken to North Kansas City Hospital.
The truck has not yet been recovered and the Platte City police are still investigating the crimes. Anyone with information can call the Platte City Police at 816-858-5150.
