Procedural changes made to county budget

The Platte County Commission will hold a public hearing next week on the proposed 2008 budget.

The hearing will be held on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. in the county commission meeting room of the Platte County Administration Building.

A new commission-proposed budget includes a budget message from the county auditor. In the message, auditor Siobhann Williams explains several items were changed in the way they are recorded in the budget.

In an interview with The Landmark, Williams said that in the past some items, such as utilities, were listed as expenses for the county commission, however they were moved to the facilities management listing to be easier to understand.

Other items moved were some transfers from the commission budget to various departments. They were listed under expenses for the commission, which added about $2.7 million to the general fund expenditures line.

However, according to Williams, the common practice by auditors is to list such transactions as decreases in revenue instead, which helps to better reflect the actual budget expenses.

The numbers reflect a decrease in budget expenses from $20.6 million to $19.3 million.

Also as a result of the transfers move, total revenue is shown to decrease from $20.6 million in 2007 to $19.3 million.

In another matter, the county commission has approved amendments to the 2007 budget after a public hearing was held during its session on Monday morning.

The following reappointments were approved by the commission: Charles Dickman to the Tri-County Domestic Violence Board; Carole Coots to the Mid-Continent Public Library Board; Bernadette Youngblood to the Platte County Planning and Zoning Commission; Dean Krug to the Platte County Planning and Zoning Commission; George Hoeffner to the Platte County Planning and Zoning Commission; and Dale Dickson to the Platte County Board of Appeals.
